Deer Fencing For Dummies in Wilton, Ct
Here in Wilton, CT, we seemed to have an unbelievable number of deer years ago. I was always appalled when I would take my little kids out to the swing set and find these wonderful little piles of deer pellets. This seemed a little disgusting to me. So, I decided to take action.
In a very short time, I was able to string electric wire to rebar posts, using the proper porcelain insulators to attach them. Three wires about a foot apart strung from rebar post to rebar post (so easy to jam into the earth!) the whole way around the property. Our lot was fairly wooded, so where there were trees, I just attached to the trunks of the trees. The driveway was another problem, as it wasn't long before the deer found that opening. A beautiful wooden gate solved that problem.
The benefit from this fencing was - voila!!!! All of a sudden, the deer couldn't eat my rhodedendruns and azaleas all winter! Oh! I also was able to grow the most beautiful hostas, lilies, etc... Wow!
Then I discovered that one limb lying from the ground across any wire anywhere could and would short out the entire perimeter.
That was the year I ordered eight foot high plastic mesh from Benner's Gardens in PA. That was just as easy to string from tree trunk to tree trunk, and then longer stronger posts from Home Depot where there were no trees. Gone was the electric wire ....
Then I discovered that my neighbors were just as interested, and we all could keep our dogs inside the fencing more easily. All of a sudden, we had 4 neighbors, all with 2 acres each, totally fenced. The deer were going crazy!!!!!
Now that our town has begun to have yearly efforts to cull the herds, we do not see many deer. I think if I took down the fencing, they would be there at night munching away...... I have 2.5 acres full of rhodies, azaleas, hostas, lilies, mountain laurel, hydrangea, etc. They would have a hay day!
A great benefit is that I can have any bush or plant that I would like in my gardens, and can have great first impressions in the summer or winter for my property. We have beautiful landscaping for our home as a result. The lucky thing here is that we are so wooded around the perimeter, that you do not even see the fencing.
