When the soldiers came home from the war after World War II, the town needed a place to house all of these young men and women coming home. It has been said that Wilton answered the need with a fabulously enormous building. It sat atop a hill in town, overlooking the town center. A beautiful, large white apartment building was built for all of the returning men and women and their spouses to call home.
Today, it is still an apartment building, and rooms are still for rent there. The Wilton Community Nursery School is located next door to it, the Post Office is on the other side, and Center School (now an office building) is across the way. Hubbard Road runs through that now. The town in the late 1940s and 1950s was primarily a farming town, and Georgetown, to the north, was a major wire mill town. During the 1950s, there was a lot of housing development for the ever burgeoning young families who found the area attractive. Ranches were the most popular style of home built in the area at that time. In the 1970s and 1980s, the colonial home became popular.
There are some places in town for folks to rent - Wilton Arms, Ogden House, Avalon Springs, and then various individual spots here and there ...
Wilton is located in lower Fairfield County, surrounded by New Canaan, Ridgefield, Redding, Weston, Westport and Norwalk. The Long Island Sound is 10 miles away, so a lot of folks enjoy the beaches and boating. New York City is 30 miles away, and hour's drive or train ride, Philadelphia is a 2 hours drive, and Boston is a 3 hour drive away.
